The Xavier mansion's Sub-Basements were constructed only in recent years.
Sub-Basement Level One is primarily given over to extensive medical facilities,
including a fully equipped operating room that can hold twenty-five beds for patients
without crowding.
This level also includes a fully-equipped gymnasium, an indoor
Olympic-size swimming pool for use when it is too cold to use the outdoor pool, a
sauna and steambath. Locker rooms are also located on this level.
Sub-Basement Level One also contains various laboratory facilities and the terminal
for the high speed magnetic rail cars that are used to reach the hangars through an
underground tunnel.
The Medi-Lab
Once little more than just a surgery/operating area (albeit specialised for mutants),
the Medi-Lab is now one of the most advanced medical facilities on Earth.
With the aid of Shi'ar technology and cutting edge programs, the lab can provide
full-scale treatment for individual injuries of physical of psi nature.
Should the need arise, as it has unfortunately done in the past, large numbers of
casualities can be treated when necessary.
Beast's Report on the New Medi-Lab:
MedLab
X-Men Underground Headquarters
Xavier Institute for the Gifted
After the Shi'ar reconstruction, the secondary redesign of the
MedLab, for which Shi'ar equipment and plans were donated by Empress
Lilandra, proceeded with additional design aid by Henry Pym, working
as a distance consultant, and Dr. Donald Blake, who was consulted for
information about application of alien technology to surgical
practice.
The final facility emerging from the efforts was built largely by
Beast, Cyclops, Colossus, and Nightcrawler, with occasional verbal
assistant by Iceman, and full commentary by Logan. Since Logan often
brought beer, we often pretended to appreciate his comments.
The MedLab is based around four distinct facilities. The first of
these is the Surgical Suite of two surgical bays, both having direct
access to sterile recovery and holding areas, two prep rooms, a
microsurgery/robotic control facility, and presurgical preparation
areas.
The second area is the Treatment Center, made up of the two holding
facilities, an environmental control space that can create local
conditions of all known Terran and Shi'ar species anywhere in the
MedLab, and two one person and two two person patient rooms. There is
also a main treatment area with three biobeds that uses a largely
automated holomatter analysis and description system and a set of
four robotic paramedic and nursing assistants.
The third area of the MedLab is the Research Laboratory, which
includes a large general reseach space, a specialized and very safely
sealed containment area for genetic and viral research and
experimentation, and the computer simulation, diagnostic and surgical
system that controls the whole area.
All three of the above spaces are entered from the Health Core, which
is made up of a main hallway, a simpler examination and treatment
room, a robot managed pharmacy, two diagnostic consulting rooms, and
a physicians' office and finally, a small waiting room.
Spaces in the MedLab are large, and structural integrity is high
throughout the faciility. Access is permitted to the Health Core by
any fully approved member of the X-Men and Xavier Institute faculty.
Only approved and trained medical technologists are admitted to the
other areas without clearance by Xavier or by one of these medical
technologists.
The entire facility is surrounded by a ring hallway from which every
space can be directly observed and control can be exhibited, using a
variety of workstations. Capability exists to annihilate any known or
posited kind of pathogen in the event of an outbreak.
Additional paramedical equipment is located in a space adjacent to
the kitchen in the main house and a second such area in the
boathouse, and a third area in the hangar. Medical crash kits are
located in a dozen locations in main buildings, and may be opened by
anybody, but opening any of the crash kits or paramedical spaces sets
off a medical emergency alarm.
